The Longest Shortest Time

You’re Crafty; Reward Yourself

By now you may have already checked out our Kickstarter page, with all of the fun rewards I have concocted especially with *you* in mind. Let us take a moment to look more closely at one of those rewards, donated by the talented and entrepreneurial Liesl Gibson. In Episode 3, you learned about how Liesl’s children’s sewing pattern company Oliver + S was born out of the monotony of early motherhood, and her deep desire for a creative outlet.

I don’t think Liesl knows this, but that interview got me thinking: Can The Longest Shortest Time become my job? Before that, I was mainly thinking of the project as something to do while I wasn’t officially working. To keep my production muscles agile. But I really related to what Liesl said about a drive to access your former creative self, and I was inspired by the fact that her relationship with her daughter fueled that creativity.

I am so thrilled that, at our $75 level, Oliver + S is donating a digital pattern to the mix. And when I say a digital pattern, I mean any digital pattern. You have 40 to choose from. I know that many of you out there are crafters, and if you haven’t sewn an Oliver + S pattern yet, it is truly a treat. I learned to sew clothes from O+S patterns (Liesl gives you a guide on how to do that here and here). And if you are lucky enough to live near a sewing shop where Liesl is teaching a guest workshop, by all means jump at the opportunity! I took a class with Liesl at Spool in Philadelphia, and learned so much more than I would’ve by merely reading a pattern.

One of the most awesome things about gearing up to build the next phase of this project is that I get to partner with people (see yesterday’s announcement re: Alex Blumberg) and organizations that have meant a lot to me in my work life and as a mom, and Oliver + S definitely falls in that camp. I hope you’ll consider helping Longest Shortest to be long, not short, and head over to our Kickstarter today.
